ENGRAVED Antique EUROPEAN Percussion Belt Pistol
HANDSOME Gentleman’s Pistol from the CONTINENT
Here we present an antique European Percussion Pistol, made circa 1840 in Mainland Europe. Belt-sized pistols like these were used to defend oneself when traveling or in public places. It was big enough to fight with, but not so large as to be cumbersome. They could be both as handsome or as plain as one desired or could afford.
Since there are no external markings the country of origin is not certain, but its form, aesthetic and engraving suggest Western Europe. It is not proof marked, thus ruling out Britain and Belgium among others. Nonetheless, this sturdy, large bore pistol is nicely engraved, well-checkered and certainly a quality piece. One can imagine that this pistol may have been purchased by a gentleman or a successful businessman.
The overall condition is very good. The metal parts appear to have been finished in the white. The engraving is sharp and clean. The stock is in very good condition with a single, stable split on the side opposite the lock. The checkering is sharp. The bore is in very good condition and the action is fine.
