Description:

1840s FRENCH Antique B&Cie Pocket or Muff Pistol

HANDSOME Mid-19th Century HIDEOUT Carry Gun in .45

Here we present a small antique Percussion Pistol, made circa the 1840s in France. This small type of pistol was very popular from the 18th and into the 19th Centuries, in Europe, as well as the colonies. They could be easily stowed in a pocket or in the case of a woman, a fur muff or purse. They were of course made primarily for self-defense, especially in cities or traveling around the countryside.

This specimen features a very nice twist pattern barrel, which turns off of the frame for loading. This was advantageous to the user as shoving a ball with a ramrod via the muzzle was quite difficult. Loading from the breech allowed a larger ball to be used, improving the gas seal and making this diminutive pistol more efficient. The pommel features a scalloped cap trap. The grain of the grip is higher end and beautiful. The frame is nicely engraved. The gun and the barrel are numbered “7” and marked “B&Cie”, the name of the company who made the gun or perhaps the retailer. The left side of the frame is marked “Brevete”, which means “patent”. A very nice and quality concealed carry pistol from 19th Century France.

The overall condition is fine. The twist pattern on the barrel is very distinct and in very good shape. Case colors are still visible on the top and bottom of the frame. The markings are legible. The grip has a very nice grain and is in fine condition. The smooth bore and the action are in good condition.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 2-7/8 inches in length.

Caliber: .45 percussion

The bore is in good condition and the firing mechanism is functional.

Overall condition as seen in photos.
