RARE Steyr Gewehr M1871/84 Mauser Designed Carbine

AUSTRIAN Gendarmerie-style MILITARY Rifle

Here we present an antique Steyr Gewehr Model 1871/84 Rifle, made circa the 1880s. With the Franco-Prussian War recently decided, each of the combatants went right to work replacing their single-shot breech-loading rifles that had utilized paper cartridges (namely the Dreyse on the German side). These were found to be highly inefficient and unreliable with ammunition still vulnerable to moisture. Along came Peter Paul Mauser, a rising star in the Prussian small arms industry. He and his brother Wilhelm developed what was to become their first successful bolt action military rifle, adopted as the Infanterie-Gewehr Model 1871 in 1872. When the design was updated to include the 8-round tubular magazine (designed by Alfred von Kropatschek) in 1884, it became a repeater known as the Model 1871/84. It was a great success and was adopted en masse by the Prussian military, as well as many other nations.

Its groundbreaking technology was soon eclipsed by their opponent, the French, as they developed the first smokeless powder cartridge and rifle in 1886, the 8mm Model 1886 Lebel, causing Germany to quickly develop and adopt a new rifle. However, the Mausers were just getting started, and would soon dominate the world’s firearm industry.

This specimen is an example of a M1871/84 that was made on contract by Österreichische Waffenfabriks-Gesellschaft in Steyr, Austria. It follows the pattern of the M1871 Gendarmerie Rifle, with its short barrel (20 inches) and a single band with a bayonet lugged nose cap. This rifle appears to have been made for export and sent abroad. Countries like China, Japan, Serbia, Siam, Honduras and Uruguay are all known to have purchased these around the turn of the 20th Century. This rifle shows evidence of having been kept in service for a long time. Some numbers match and others do not, the magazine tube has been replaced with a dowel and a block placed under the elevator, so that it is now stationary.

The overall condition of the piece is good. The metal surfaces still retain much of the original finish and have turned a dark gray otherwise. The only marking on the receiver yet visible is “STEYR” and “78” on the stock. The stock shows much wear. The graft on the toe of the butt stock is either from the factory or a period arsenal refurbishment. The bore is in good condition with no pitting and clear rifling. The action is functional. Overall a very interesting and unique piece of history that has yet to be fully discovered.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is round and 20 inches in length.

Caliber: 8mm

Bore is in very good condition and the firing mechanism is functional.

Overall condition as seen in photos.
