RICHARDS-MASON Antique COLT’s 1860 Army Revolver
RARE & Highly Sought 1 of 9,000 Conversion Colt
Here we present an antique Richards-Mason Colt 1860 Army Revolver, made in 1871 in Hartford, Connecticut. The Richards-Mason Conversion was Colt’s second attempt at designing a suitable cartridge revolver after the Smith & Wesson held Rollin White Patent expired in 1869, ending the stranglehold that S&W had on the idea of the bored-through cylinder. The first, the Thuer Conversion, was a front-loading idea that was not very effective. Colt employees Charles Richards and William Mason were responsible for the success in being able to convert many of the Civil War surplus 1860 Army Revolvers that Colt still had in inventory. They would go on to design the iconic Colt Single Action Army and win the 1872 U.S. Trials. You can see a bit of the SAA in the Richards-Mason Converted 1860 Army.
This specimen is in very good condition. A small amount of the original blue remains on the barrel and the rest has turned a deep and uniform brown patina. The cylinder scene is still quite visible. The markings are clear and legible. The grips are in good condition with a sliver out of the right side. The bore and mechanism are in very good condition. Ejector rod is absent.
This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 5-1/8 inches in length.
