Description:
Colt Model 1855 first model sporting rifle. Manufactured in 1856-59. 27" barrel, .36 cal; serial #1227. The top of the barrel is round, marked "COLTS PT. 1856/ ADDRESS COL. HARTFORD, CT". This is the first model sporting rifle, primarily evidenced by the presence of the patent oiler device noted on the left side of the frame. The serial number is too high for this model (1000 produced). Also the first model does not have a full stock. According to R.L. Sutherland's "The Book of Firearms," a transition model was produced, which extends the late first model sporting into the early full stock sporting rifles. The major features of transition were the presence of the patent oiler device and of a fore stock. There is no cylinder scene on the fluted cylinder. The rear sight is missing, as is the cleaning rod extension in the storage compartment. The cleaning rod is present. The sporting rifle did not have swing swivels; however, as evidenced by the bluing, the swing swivels, and possibly the rear barrel band, appear to be correct replacements.
