RARE EARLY AMERICAN COLONIAL ERA DUTCH FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOL CIRCA 1690-1720. 22”overall with 14 ¼” smoothbore .65 caliber barrel. 100% original example of the type made in Maastricht, Holland in the period 1690-1720 characterized by all steel mounts and having relief acanthus leaf and vine carved walnut stocks with openwork “Sea Serpent” side plates. Early style “Banana” shaped lock plate clearly struck on the inside with the touch mark of the maker (J F) which is unlisted in Der Neue Stockel. Lock with all the original parts and hammer with relief “Vine” motif engraving complimenting the stock carving and with a bone forend cap. Excellent condition with the metal having a rich untouched dark patina and the stock with the original finish nicely burnished with age. Forend cap nicely restored. Lock in working order. An very similar pistol with almost identical stock carving and steel mounts the same as well is pictured in “DUTCH GUNS IN RUSSIA” edited by Blackmore and Visser on pages 344-345. The lock of the illustrated pistol is signed “MASTREK”. Both pistols probably by the same maker. Pistols of this type would have been acquired by the New York Dutch in their trading activities with Holland and the style of the carving on this pistol is typical of carving seen on New York Dutch Hudson River Fowlers. Very scarce and in excellent condition for it’s age.
