Description:
FINE REVOLUTIONARY WAR ERA GEORGE III TOWER FLINTLOCK HEAVY DRAGOON PISTOL CIRCA 1780. 19” overall with 12” round smoothbore .59 caliber barrel with Royal Ordnance proofs at the center breech. Lock plate stamped with the “CROWN/BROAD ARROW” and the Royal Cypher. Tail of the plate with crisp “TOWER” stamp. Walnut stock with brass mounts and with inspector’s stamp “I R” in the wood just to the rear of the side plate. Inspector’s stamp “S” struck to the rear of the barrel tang and a Store Keeper’s cartouche dated 1780 struck on the right wrist. Left side of barrel stamped with later Constabulary identification numbers often seen on British antique arms. 100% original and fine in every respect including all the lock parts and the ramrod. Beautiful metal with the original deep grey patina and the stock with all the original finish. Perfect working order. It is stated in De Witt Bailey’s book “Small Arms of the British Forces in America 1664-1815” pp.281-219 that these pistols were originally developed for use by American Loyalist mounted militia units in the South and that 400 pairs of pistols were delivered to the Ordnance Store Ship Juliana at Charleston Harbour, South Carolina in December 1781, which Professor Bailey states were most probably of this pattern. Very scarce and a superb example.
