Only 1,000 are estimated to have been made, making this a very rare specimen. Thomas K. Bacon was the founder of the company and was also involved with the Manhattan Fire Arms Co. as the superintendent. He also had business dealings with Ethan Allen and Allen & Thurber. When Manhattan moved their operation away from Norwich, Bacon left the company to stay behind and work on his own firearms manufacturing company. Part of Bacon’s contract with Manhattan included a “no-compete” clause that he would have been in violation of had the heads of Manhattan had bothered to sign the agreement. Nevertheless, they still took him to court with no official judgement recorded. Bacon’s arms were popular on the commercial market and many made their way onto Civil War battlefields upon being privately purchased by soldiers. A copy of the essay Thomas K. Bacon—The Arms and The Man by Lowell J. Wagner will be included with this purchase. This example is a carefully made and beautiful .22 rimfire revolving pepperbox. The pepperbox concept first became popular in the 1830s, but this model was new and improved to utilize the bored through cylinder to handle standard metallic cartridges, since the Smith & Wesson owned Rollin White Patent expired in 1869. The frame is made of iron with a fine silver plate finish. Once you hold this revolver and operate it, you will understand how well it was made. The overall condition is excellent. The original silver finish is 95% complete. The hammer shows vibrant case coloring. The cylinder still shows a slight amount of original blue with the balance having turned a very smooth, even and mild patina. The markings are clear and legible. The serial numbers match and are #37! The serial is marked on the inside of the grips in pencil. The condition of the rosewood grips are very fine, with a clear grain and great varnish. The bores are fine and the action is excellent. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. No better example found for sale worldwide! Barrel is 2-3/8 inches in length. Caliber: .22 rimfire Bore is in fine condition and the revolver is in excellent working order. Overall condition as seen in photos.
