Mississippi Rifle Model 1841 US percussion rifle aka “Mississippi rifle” 16-5
Marked Harpers Ferry 1847, marked on the back of the lock, Eagle with arrows and US, marked on the middle of the lock. 54 caliber, 33” round barrel, bore has 60-70% of the original rifling & a little corrosion, proof markings on barrel. The rifle has a brown barrel, case-hardened lock and hammer and brass furniture with the distinctive large brass patchbox with place for spare nipple. The stock is oil-finished walnut. Its use by the 1st Mississippi Regiment led by Jefferson Davis at the Battle of Buena Vista in the Mexican War.
The M1841 was continually modified and saw extensive service in both service with both Federal and Confederate forces during the first years of the Civil War. CONDITION: Fine. The barrel has a smooth brown patina finish overall with virtually no pitting on barrel, nipple or bolster. The case-hardened hammer and lockplate have aged to a dark blue patina with no corrosion at all. All markings on the lock are clear and sharp and deep. The brass furniture is in excellent condition and free from nicks or scratches and is bright.Screws are fine throughout. The stock shows virtually no wear and has some very small, dents, dings, one small chip next to tang, looks very attractive. The action is crisp and tight. Very hard to find in this original condition-most were bored out to .58 smoothbore and used long and hard during the Civil War, A fine example of a dated M1841 Rifle.
