Description:
SCARCE WESTLEY RICHARDS HAND DETACHABLE BOXLOCK EJECTOR SINGLE TRIGGER DELUXE “OVUNDO” ORIGINAL 3″ CHAMBERED HEAVY GAME GUN WITH CASE.
SN 17XXX. (1915) Cal. 12 ga. 3″ Chambers. 29″ Demi-bloc bbls are fitted with concave, matted, solid rib. Left side rib is engraved “Westley Richards 178 New Bond St London Gun Makers by Appointment to His Majesty George V Rex et Imp.” “OVUNDO”. Right rib is engraved “Von Lengerke & Antoine Chicago Agents”. Left sides of bbls are stamped with London nitro proofs for 1-1/4 oz of shot and long chambers. Left side of bottom bbl is engraved with “Ovundo” patent numbers. Case hardened, round bodied, ogee backed OU action with detachable locks has water table stamped with patent numbers. Locks are housed under hinged floorplate and are fully engine turned, and stamped with patent use number “2751”, also inlaid “L” and “R” in gold. Action is engraved with full coverage well cut large scroll surrounding ovate game scenes on sides of action under “WESTLEY RICHARDS”; a trio of feeding pheasant on left, and alert partridge on right. Top is engraved “Westley Richards Patent One Trigger”. Automatic safety has SAFE inlaid in gold. Blued floorplate has more scroll surrounding scene of black game cock and hen in highland environment. Single trigger with selector on right side is in small bow trigger guard engraved with pointing pointer on bow. SN is on tang. Finely marbled and nicely stump figured European walnut round knob “Prince of Wales” grip buttstock measures 14-3/8″ over Westley Richards embossed checkered horn buttplate over 7/8″ ebony spacer. Fancy pattern closely spaced checkering with line borders and intrusive fleur-di-lis are at grip. Rectangular horn chip guards are installed either side of trigger plate behind floorplate (most likely factory; one replaced). A gold truncated rectangle on toe line is engraved “S. S.” “10 – 10 – 77” “N.S.” Matching one piece ejector forend with large horn tip has Deeley release. Bore diameter: top -.735, bottom – .735. Bore restrictions: Screw chokes installed. Wall thickness: top – .027, bottom – .025. Drop at heel: 2-9/16″, drop at comb: 1-11/16″. Cast: approx 1/4″ off. Weight: 7 lbs. 10 oz. LOP: 14-3/8″. What appears to be orig makers leather case with shaped brass corners, is lined in burgundy cloth, and has Westley Richards New Bond Street paper label in lid. Case contains 2-pc rosewood and brass cleaning rod with mop and brush, a pair of snap caps, and three Briley thin wall choke tubes (2 in gun, for a total of 5).

CONDITION: Fine, as partially refinished. Bbls retain essentially all of a high quality rust blue, engraving still clear. Action retains a considerable amount, perhaps as much as 50% orig, never very strong, case hardening color. Top lever, floorplate, and trigger guard have been re-blued, and retain nearly all of that blue. Stocks have been nicely refinished over a few marks, with a few light subsequent marks. Checkering freshened. Bores are very fine to excellent, with a few light striations and frosting. Action is tight. Single Trigger works. Case leather is dark, with numerous chips, rubs and scratches. Newer straps are good. Handle missing. Interior cloth is good with some normal age period wear. Label is very good, foxed overall, and has some compressions and soiling. Accessories are good. A scarce gun especially in 3″ chambering; few Ovundos were made.
