Description:

KITTREDGE Marked Antique SHARPS & Co. 30 Pepperbox

UNIQUE 19th Century HIDEOUT Gun in .30 Rimfire

Here we present an antique Christian Sharps & Co. Model 2A Pepperbox Pistol, made circa 1866 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Christian Sharps invented his famously large bore, breech-loading rifle in 1848, after practicing gun-making under John Hall at Harpers Ferry Armory. In 1859 he premiered another unique design in the 4-barreled pepperbox pistol with a revolving firing pin. This repeating design was able to utilize the new rimfire ammunition like Smith & Wesson, without infringing on Smith & Wesson’s Rollin White Patent for bored through chambers on a revolver’s cylinder. This gave Sharps a leg up in the market since everyone else either had to produce single shot pistols, come up with an alternate ammunition and weapon design, or just stick with percussion until the patent expired. They made very nice, easy to use and compact firearms for 19th Century conceal and carry.

This example has a scarce retailer marking from B. Kittredge & Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio. Benjamin Kittredge was the founder of the company, and he and his firm remain most noteworthy for being a distributor of arms during the American Civil War and into the latter 1800s.

This specimen is in very good condition. The barrel cluster bears an even gray patina. The markings are clear and legible. The right grip is gutta percha and has been repaired and the left panel was made to replace. The bores are in good condition and the action is functional.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
