LATE 1770’S. .79 caliber smoothbore 46” barrel with Royal Ordnance proofs at the breech. Original Pattern 1777 lock marked “TOWER” behind the hammer and with the George III Cypher (CROWN/GR) forward of the hammer. Royal Ordnance “CROWN/BROAD ARROW” acceptance mark stamped beneath the pan. Inside of lock plate stamped with Crown Inspector’s mark “CROWN/22” and the lock maker stamp “H M”. Last variation of the Long Land Pattern post 1777 made in limited quantities as discussed in Moeller’s “AMERICAN MILITARY SHOULDER ARMS, VOL. 1, pp. 220-221. With all the correct brass mounts and side plate of the late model Long Land and with all the original lock parts and screws. Underside of sideplate with correct Roman numeral assembler’s mark. Tiger maple stock a very nice looking American replacement. Fine condition for one of these often found in heavily used condition. Metal and stock have been lightly cleaned for museum display. It is our belief that these were intended for use by Loyalist militia units during the latter part of the American Revolution-particularly in the South from 1779-1781. Long Land Brown Bess muskets are very scarce and seldom seen for sale. Very handsome example that would fit nicely in any Revolutionary War display-either private collection or museum exhibit.
