Description:

FINE & Beautiful European COLARD Pinfire Revolver

11mm BELGIAN Made w Deep Blue, Scroll, EBONY Grip

Here we present an antique European Pinfire Revolver by Louis Colard, made circa 1865. This double action revolver was designed to be a full-sized self-defense or military revolver, worn on the belt in a holster in 19th Century Europe. It utilized 11mm (about .43 caliber) pinfire cartridges.

The pinfire cartridge was one of the very first successful metallic, self-contained cartridges in history. It was invented by Frenchman Casimir Lefaucheux, and he was granted a patent in the mid-1830s. This predates the invention of rimfire by about 10 years. Aside from being first, the pinfire cartridge was not primed on the back of the cartridge, but had a pin (basically a firing pin) projecting out of the side of the cartridge. Thus the revolvers made for this early cartridge had flat hammers that struck the cylinder and cartridge from the top, as the pin would project out of a small hole in the cylinder. The first revolver to shoot these ingenious cartridges was Casimir’s son Eugene Gabriel Lefaucheux in 1854.

The design was hugely successful and many European militaries adopted them. The design was also licensed to be made many firms, especially in Belgium, but many were also made in France, Spain and Germany. The North & South also purchased up to 14,000 of them during the crisis of the American Civil War.

This example features a very nicely blued frame, cylinder and barrel with handsome floral engraving and inlays on the frame and cylinder. The hinged tab on the bottom of the frame allows the user to take out a large screw that holds the barrel wedge securely in place. The barrel assembly also features a shield in from of the cylinder. A small plunger secures the loading gate in place. Grips are ebony. This revolver functions in both double and single action mode and has a large bore at 11mm, making it somewhat the equivalent of or precursor to the Smith & Wesson 44 DA Revolver or Colt’s 1878 Frontier Revolver. This is a very nice and quality example.

The overall condition is fine. The original blue is about 60%. Markings are clear and legible. The grips are smooth and solid, showing little wear. The bore is fine and the action is excellent.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 6-1/4 inches in length.
