The Pepperbox Revolver made by this company and its predecessors (same “Allen” company with a rotation of various partners) was the first double action revolver in the United States. It was the cutting edge in self-defense firearms during that period, beginning in about 1837. For quite a while, the Allen Pepperbox had the market cornered on revolvers, even as Samuel Colt made his entrance onto the world stage. They enjoyed popularity just about everywhere: in the East, going West, the Gold Rush of 1849, the Seminole Wars, the Mexican-American War, and the Civil War. It would be not be until about 1850, when Colt came out with the 1849 Pocket, that the percussion pepperbox would begin to be surpassed. Nevertheless, they were still in production throughout the American Civil War and many were privately purchased and carried into combat as sidearms. This specimen is marked “ALLEN & WHEELOCK” inside a barrel flute. “PATENTED/APRIL 16, 1845” is marked on the bar hammer. It is a small variant, made for pocket carry. It holds 5 shots of .32 caliber ball. This specimen is in near fine overall condition. There are traces of original blue on the frame and on the barrel. There is a deep plum brown patina. Markings are clear and legible. Serial number is “250” with a batch number of “19” and all numbers match. The walnut grips are very smooth, showing little wear. The bores are smooth and in very good condition. The action is fine. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 3 inches in length. Caliber: .32 percussion Bores are in very good condition. The firing mechanism is functional. Overall condition as seen in photos.
