NICE 1840s ENGLISH Antique CLARKE Pocket Pistol
HIDEOUT Carry Gun Made in Leicester, England
Here we present an antique Clarke Percussion Folding Trigger Pistol, made circa 1840 in Leicester, England. This pistol was designed for very close quarters self-defense, and was very much along the same lines as the Henry Deringer pistol in America. The maker was the Clarke family, likely Edward, and the family business was founded in that township in 1832. The business stayed in the family until about 1881.
This pistol features a folding trigger, which deploys as the trigger is cocked; a sliding safety behind the trigger; and an octagonal turn-off barrel, making loading a larger ball easier than ramming one down the muzzle. This latter feature also negated the use of a ramrod and helped create a better gas seal, making the short barrel and single shot as efficient and effective as possible. The frame and barrel are neatly engraved. The frame and barrel show Birmingham proof marks, and are numbered “1” to match one another. Certainly a classy carry option!
The overall condition is fine. The barrel yet retains some of the original blue. The markings are clear and legible. The smooth bore is fine and shiny. The action is excellent.
