Look for the gold '55 Chevy road sign! ~Trades and offers are always considered~ Rare & Desirable M1851 Colt Navy Percussion Revolver, Factory Ivory Grips & Gustave Young Engraved with Scarce "London" Style Iron Backstrap & Triggerguard, .36 cal, mfg. 1856. While the standard US production '51 Navy featured a brass backstrap and triggerguard, those made for Colt's London agency utilized iron straps with a large triggerguard bow. Additionally, the hammers of London Colts indexed about 10% further than US production, which called for a large notch to be cut into the top of the backstrap for clearance. As production of the London revolvers began to cease around 1856, any left over parts intended for England were built into US production revolvers. Colt did not like to waste anything! This rare variant only turns up in a few very specific serial number ranges and is so unusual that it is often overlooked as a distinct model. Not to be confused with the earlier Hartford-London Colts, these "London surplus" guns are true US production, lacking British proofs with a standard New York barrel address. This revolver features the matching serial number 58172 on the frame, backstrap, triggerguard, barrel, wedge, and loading lever, while the cylinder is a closely numbered period mismatch showing number 61709. Without a doubt the cylinder has been with this gun since the earliest years of it's life, and considering the fact that it was built with at least a few surplus parts it could be possible that the cylinder is original. The letter "I" is stamped below the serial number indicating the gun was to be fitted with Ivory grips from the factory. The gun features beautiful scroll engraving throughout with Gustave Young's trademark wolf's head hammer motif. The engraving is very crisp throughout with only slight wear around the flats of the barrel. The metal has turned a silver/gray patina overall with only the slightest traces of original bluing and case color remaining within protected areas. The edges of the gun are still quite sharp and the cylinder scene is remarkably intact. The original Ivory grips feature a pleasing mellowed color with typical grain checks and slight erosion along the inside edge. Otherwise there are no chips, cracks, or repairs. The butt screw is a replacement while all other screws are original. Rolled New York barrel address with engraved "COLT'S PATENT" frame marking. There is a "2" stamped at the base of the barrel. Some argue this mark indicates being one of a matched pair, however it is my belief that guns marked with "2" were meant to receive a higher grade fit and finish. Original trigger, hammer, front sight, and loading lever latch which clicks securely shut. The action is very crisp and functions perfectly. The cylinder locks up tight and there is absolutely no barrel wobble. Mechanically this is a very crisp and solid gun. All nipples are clean originals and the bore shows good, strong rifling front to back. A proper cleaning will likely brighten it up nicely. A very attractive and sharp gun that tells a story! A superb addition to any Colt or antique arms collection. NOTE! Due to Ivory restrictions we will not ship this to New York state, New Jersey, or California. No international Sales.
