Description:

SCHOOLCRAFT, MI 1850s E.K. Purdy O/U Double Rifle

RARE Mule Ear Percussion Long Rifle, Maker Marked

Here we present an antique E.K. Purdy Double Rifle, made circa 1850 in Schoolcraft, Michigan. While most gun makers of the first half of the 19th century focused on making single-shot, muzzle-loading, percussion rifles, some played with the idea of multi-barrel rifles with side-mounted locks, sometimes referred to as “Mule Ears”. Some were made with two rifled barrels, while some had a rifled barrel over a smooth bore for “buck and ball”. Providing that second shot capability was an obvious advantage in every way and for most applications, whether hunting or fighting. It may have been a little heavier, but there was less wood, making it more rugged than the average long rifle.
Elijah K. Purdy was a gun maker and shop owner from New York, who set up in Schoolcraft, Michigan. He was born circa 1816 and was active until about 1870.
This example features two rifled barrels with a silver blade front sight and a very light double set trigger. The back-action lock has percussion hammers mounted on the side of the gun, instead of on top. The barrels are each marked “E.K. PURDY/SCHOOLCRAFT/MICH.”
The overall condition is very good. The barrels have a browning patina. The markings are legible. The stock is smooth, and has a repair above the lock on the right side. The trigger guard is cracked. The bores are in very good condition, with good rifling. The action is fine.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 33-1/4 inches in length.
Caliber: .50 percussion
Bores are in very good condition and the mechanism is fine.
Overall condition as seen in photos.
Here is a very nice, unique double rifle, made in Michigan by Elijah K. Purdy!
