This pistol was designed to make massive holes in things, especially in self-defense. This pistol would have been worn on the belt, possibly in a holster. The gun is very handsome and ornate, befitting a pistol used by someone in the upper middle class. The pistol features a Damascus twist barrel with a brown finish. There is a slight taper to the octagonal barrel and then a flare at the muzzle. The breech has been engraved with flowers. The bore is a large .56 caliber with many very small lands and grooves for rifling. The grip is gracefully curved and the bore is directly in line with the hand for excellent recoil management. A decorative escutcheon is located on the left side, opposite the lock, along with the barrel tang, pommel cap, trigger guard, end cap, and finial. The lock is unmarked aside from assembly marks, “IIII”, which matches the trigger, barrel, breechplug, barrel tang, etc. The bottom of the barrel is also marked “52” and “ROVE”, which may be the name of the gun maker. The inside of the stock is marked “COLE” and forward of that is a stamp “LR”. Finally, the left side of the barrel is Liege proofed “ELG”. The overall condition is very good. The barrel retains its distinct twist pattern, as well as the brown finish. The barrel tang, trigger guard, lock and hammer are casehardened and show vibrant colors in protected areas. Markings are engravings are crisp and clear. The stock is in very good condition, with a very old and repaired crack just behind the lock. The bore is fine. The action is very strong and smooth, very high quality. This would make a fantastic antique shooter for those interested in black powder, as well as a great display piece. Own the original!
