Description:
Small bore English hammerguns were not made in large numbers. I have not seen any guns offered by this maker. I have not been able to find very much about Henry Egg. One can assume that he was a decsendant of the well respected gun making family of Durs Egg.
Regardless, this gun has all the qualities of a "Best Made" gun of this period,
(presumably the 1870's.)
The gun has many desireable features, side lever, long barrels(28 inches) peninsular locks, carved percussion style fences, extended top tang, rebounding hammers, etc.
The gun has 50% percent fine scroll engraving. The highly figured straight-grip stock has crisp checkering and a checkered horn buttplate. A silver oval in the toe of stock, appears to be engraved with a Royal crest or "coat of arms".
The rib is inscribed with (Henry Egg No. 1. Picadilly London.) The forend iron is inscribed with (H. W. Egg Improved Bolt)
Barrel flats show London black powder proof marks. Stamped 20B & 21M
Tubes stamped "not for ball", and deep letters HS.
Barrels are 28 inches long and choked cyl & imp cyl.
Condition: Very fine retaining over 95% of its original finishes.( the trigger guard appears to have been reblued at some point)
case coloring is 85% fading toward grey. The fine "star" damascus pattern is 98% visible and the original black & white coloring is 95%.
The wood has most all of the original.finish with minor nicks & scratches.
The gun is "tight on the face" with or without the forend attached. Locks are crisp, bores are bright and shiny.
This gun is offered at a terrific price at $5200. Shipping is $50.
An FFL is not required to ship this gun as it was made prior to 1898.
