Description:
Commonly known as a "Wartime Commercial" by today's collectors this Mauser C96 Broomhandle has had two military lives so to speak.  First, it was purchased, inspected, and accepted by the Austrian Military during World War 1 in 1916.  This military acceptance proof was stamped on the angled right chamber flat "Eagle 16".  After the end of the hostilities of WW1 it stayed in the service of the Austrian Army and was officially reworked in 1932.  When the rework was complete it was again inspected and accepted into service with another proof stamp, this time on the vertical right chamber flat, stamped with the Austrian eagle and the last two digits of the year "32".  Sometime during this period it was assigned to a regiment and the backstrap was stamped with "R 3" over "124".  This most likely stands for Regiment 3, weapon number 124.  This Broomhandle has had a matte blue finish applied to it somewhere along the line; maybe when it was reworked in 1932.  It does not show any evidence of buffing or grinding and still shows all of the machining marks in the metal left behind when the pistol was manufactured.  All of the numbered parts still match and it appears to be completely original except for the matte finish.  The walnut grip panels are in great shape and fit the Mauser perfectly.  They are free from cracks or repairs.  The bore is very good and has strong rifling with sharp lands and grooves.  Everything works 100% like it is supposed to and the action is nice and tight with no slop.  If you have been looking for a Mauser C96 Broomhandle that is a real deal WW1 survivor that you can shoot without feeling too bad, this is it!
