Description:
Charles Lancaster 20 Bore SxS
SLE, 2 BARREL SET, AWESOME MAKERS CASE W/ LABELS, 1898, WOW!

General Specs: Charles Lancaster, Year 1898, 20 Gauge, 5bls 10oz with damascus, 5lbs 11oz with steel, Side by Side
Serial Number: 7977

Charles Lancaster, Gunmaker, was established in 1826 and made a mark in the gun industry through 1932 when it was absorbed by Grant and Lang.  Firmly established as a LONDON BEST GUNMAKER, serving King Edward VII, King George V, and The Prince of Whales, and winning 72 First Class prizes and awards, Charles Lancaster guns are still considered amongst the top 10 gunmakers in the London trade.  Here we have a very rare sidelock assisted opening action in 20 bore, sn7977 built in 1898, making it an antique we can ship to any address specified by the buyer, within the U.S.A.  I get to see many fine shotguns, but this one really impresses beyond most all I have had.  Delivered to me in the original maker’s BEST QUALITY LEATHER CASE with brass corners, intact and original trade label, load label, and factory instruction sheets, it is in remarkable condition and a truly beautiful example of BEST quality gun making skills.  Originally shipped with 28” fine Damascus barrels choked ½ choke each barrel, it was fitted with absolutely beautiful fluid steel barrels in 1976.  I surmise the owner was ill-advised that he should not shoot modern ammo in Damascus barrels and then ordered the new fluid steel barrels proofed for 2 ¾” 20ga. loads.  I say ill-advised because the Damascus barrels are perfect with mirror bores, minimum wall thickness of 31 thou, and are still in proof with their original 2 1/2” chambers, and they fit perfectly tight on face to the standing breech, completely up for the task of shooting 7/8 oz. loads from RSTshells.  The Damascus pattern rates at 95%, the lettering and engraving is sharp, and the ribs are tight. The second set of barrels are master craftsmanship exemplified, struck to perfection, mirror bores, and choked IC/F, beautifully engraved to match the original set, made in Belgium to the most rigid standards.  The gun balances perfectly on the hinge pin with both sets of barrels and the weight is less than one ounce different…a testament to BEST QUALITY gun making.  See the specifics of both sets of barrels in the accompanying tables below.  The action is an assisted opening action, one of the first ever devised, the mechanics are 100% excellent with strong well-timed ejectors, crisp triggers, and tight lock up.  The wood-to-metal fit of the stock and forend is perfect, with nice dimensions of      14 9/16” x 2 ¼” x 1 ½” x ¼” cast off, checkered butt, perfect checkering…all so nice!  I have spent most of the day admiring this gun that weighs 5lbs. 10oz.  I will be shooting the gun this weekend before it is sold!  So here we have it; a LONDON BEST, sidelock, assisted opener, 2-barrel set, cased in vintage original maker’s case…versatile chokes and ready to go for a very affordable price.  Thanks for looking!
