#4584, Holland & Holland, 98 New Bond Street, London; A superb Jones Action Underlever Back-Action Non-Rebounding Hammer 12 Bore Black Powder Express Double Rifle Completed by H&H on August 27,1877, 2 3/4" Case, 28" Steel fully rifled barrels, Full length rib with 1 standing & 3 folding rear sights, Percussion style fences, Stalking hammer safeties, Full length trigger guard tang to a steel engraved grip cap, Extremely solid and sound wood with excellent color & contrast with deep browns and black, Shadowline cheekpiece, Sling eyes, Cross bolting wedge forend tiedown, 15" LOP over an engraved steel buttplate, 11 lbs. 4 oz., This is a full rifled set of barrels and the bores remain very good plus with sharp rifling the entire way from breech to muzzle with pitting the first 12" but none of them deep, I would put them at 87-90% from the day they were cut, All the screws are in excellent shape and nearly everyone lays north & south including those inside the forend, The barrels lay on the receiver flats and the breech face like the best built bank vault; The previous owner about 30 years ago had St. Ledger in England recolor harden the entire action body, lock plates, hammers, forend iron, trigger guard, grip cap and the buttplate, The wood was absolutely professionally refinished and remains as redone, 45% coverage of period scroll engraving, This rifle shoots very well with 6 1/2 to 7 drams of black powder and a 588 grain bullet and will produce 4 shot groups at 3-4" at 50 yards, It is cased in a leather trunk with C. K. Post U.S.N. embossed on the outside. /////////////////////////////////// The rifle was previously owned by Charles K. Post, whose name is on the rifle's case, a US Navy officer assigned to the armored cruiser USS New York (ARC-2) that enforced the blockade of the port of Santiago de Cuba harbor in 1898 when five Spanish war ships tried to break out of the naval blockade during the Spanish American War. During the ensuing naval battle, all Spanish ships were sunk or scuttled by the American fleet that included the New York. The New York was launched in December of 1891 and was exceptionally fast for its day at 21 knots. It was mounted with 8 inch and 12 inch guns and was credited with actions against 11 Spanish vessels.
