Description:
There were only about 2,000 of these Pepperboxes made in Baltimore, Maryland for the Starr Firearms Company between 1864 and 1869.  Maryland was a border state during the Civil War and we wonder how many of these found their way via southern sympathizers to the Confederacy.  This example shows some use over the last 150 years.  It would still fire today but the rotating firing pin no longer rotates when the hammer is cocked.  The hammer still holds at the safety position and full cock, and the trigger still works properly releasing the hammer.   The original silver plating is still present on the frame in a lot of areas as you can see in the pictures, but the original blue finish on the barrels is mostly gone with some brown patina remaining in places.  The original Walnut grips are still present and in good shape.  They are free from cracks and repairs, and they are still nice and tight to the frame.  The bores in all 4 barrels are better than average, with some pitting throughout but strong rifling remaining visible in all 4.  The only markings stamped on this pistol are on both the bottom of the barrels and on top of the frame below the barrels, a matching "8 E".  This is a very scarce and interesting Starr Pepperbox that could have been carried in the Civil War.  If you do not have a Pepperbox in your collection, this would be a great addition that displays this important evolution in antique pocket pistol design.
