Manufactured by E. Whitney under contract with 10,000 units produced under recommendation of Capt. John Dahlgren of the U.S. Navy. Also known as the “Plymouth rifle”. Single shot muzzleloader with 34” .69 caliber three-groove barrel. Has 1st style lockplate with large eagle motif.
1st style lockplate with large eagle-shield-flag motif; U.S./WHITNEY-VILLE; "1863". Bright finished barrel and lockplate is still shiny with a dusting of brown patina along the barrel. Inspector markings present on stock opposite lockplate. Long range flip up ladder rear sight. Correct steel ramrod. Leather sling with swivels. Black walnut stock.
