Description:
SOLD...Antique 1873 Winchester 2nd model octagon barrel 44-40. Here is a decent 1873 2nd model in 44-40 of course as all 2md models are in 44-40. S/N 65351 and made in 1881. Has the standard slightly heavier 24" barrel that these earlier 73's have. The bore is very good with the deeper and stronger rifling that these early 73's have. Just shows some minor roughness with no big pits or craters and no breaks in the rifling. The barrel on this gun alone is worth $800.. Very nice bore on this one... The mechanics are excellent and it feeds, fires and ejects just fine. Still very accurate. The chamber has a small defect and it shows a small wrinkle on the fired case but it does not split the case and the extraction is still just fine with no problems and does not effect the function or accuracy if the gun at all. Very good shooter here. Still has the original dust cover but is loose as most are and should be pulled back by hand so the bolt does not slip under it and cause the action to bind. It still stays in the retracted position when firing so no issues there.. The old timers removed these because of this but this one has survived in tact. Has the early 2nd model dust cover rail that is held on by a screw from the top {see photo} ...The markings are all very clear and readable. No caliber markings on the barrel or the brass carrier as is totaly correct for this time period. The metal is a clean gray patina with no pitting on the gun at all. The receiver has a dent on top right in front of the dust cover that has no effect in function at all.. Also, I believe the side plates are off of a 3rd model as the loading gate screw inters from the inside and not the outside like they are on the 2nd models but they match the gun perfectly in color and wear so have been on the gun for a long time and they fit perefctly with no effect on the function or looks of the gun... Has the original front sight rocky mountain style and the rear sight is from a 3rd model also but is an original Winchester sight. The wood has been clean but has a great color. The forearm fits tight with no cracks or slpits but fits slightly below the metal in places. Has a very small chip on the left side front and rear but does not detract from the gun at all. {see photos} The butt stock fits tight but has a dent or wear area on the left side below the upper tang and also a small chip that looks like it was repaired on the upper end at the end of the butt plate {see photos} . The wood has great color and not oil soaked but has been sanded a little as the butt stock is below the upper tang and receiver a bit.{see photos}. Fits perfect on the lower tang.. The butt stock has the number 805 on the stock and the lower tang inside so it is the original butt stock. The forearm is original to the gun also. All in all, not a bad looking early 2nd model as most of these early guns show much wear and tear. My description sounds worse than it actually is but I am an honest seller and I mention everything that I see because I want happy customers.. Besides a few 3rd model parts, this is a pretty honest ole 73 that still shoots and functions like it should. Here is one that won't break your bank account and is still very collectible as these 2nd model are getting hard to find that are not completely worn out. Remember, all of my guns have been test fired and they work !!!! Many of these for sale do not and parts and repairs get very expensive... Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. Please check my other listings while you are here to see what else I have for sale. Will be listing many more soon..$50 insured shipping.
