Description:

FINE 49er Allen & Thurber PEPPERBOX Revolver

FIRST AMERICAN Double Action Revolver 6-Shots .31

Here we present an antique Allen & Thurber Bar Hammer Pepperbox Percussion Revolver, made circa 1847 in Worcester, Massachusetts. These were the first American double action revolvers, and they enjoyed even greater popularity than Sam Colt’s initial designs. The history that these handguns enjoyed over the years is astounding: the Seminole Wars, Gold Rush, Mexican War and American Civil War. They were also popular with Westward travelers. An early Allen Pepperbox was also the personal weapon of the “Lion of the Lord, Brigham Young, of the Latter-day Saints. These guns are true relics of American history. If it could speak, it could tell some stories.

This size would have been carried on the belt, as seen in daguerreotypes from the period, especially Antebellum and during the American Civil War, though it could also fit in a jacket pocket. It features a 3-3/8 inch ribbed barrel cluster, capable of carrying 6 shots of .31 caliber ball. As befitted the times, the frame and nipple shield is nicely scroll engraved with a floral design. Since many of these are known to have gone West for the 1849 California Gold Rush, they are known to collectors as “49ers”.

A note to collectors: these pistols were made in at least 50 different variations, making this an excellent area to start collecting.

The overall condition of this piece is fine. The iron surfaces still bear about 30% of the original blue finish. The markings are legible. “ALLEN & THURBER/WORCESTER” and “PATENTED/1837/CAST STEEL” on the barrel. “ALLEN’S PATENT” on bar hammer. All numbers match. Grips are also numbered to match and are in fantastic condition. The bores are very good, smooth and clean. The action is excellent.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 3-3/8 inches in length (measured just forward of nipples).

Caliber: .31 percussion

Bores are in very good condition. The firing mechanism is excellent.

Overall condition as seen in photos.

Here is a great example of an Allen & Thurber Pepperbox with a rich history!
