Description:

Allen & Thurber Double Action Turn Barrel Pistol

ANTEBELLUM Self-Defense Single Shot Pistol

Here we present an antique Allen & Thurber Bar Hammer Single Shot Percussion Pistol, made circa 1850 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Only a few thousand are estimated to have been made. This small pistol was designed for 19th Century conceal and carry duty, and it was very handy too. Like its English brethren, it utilized a single, screw-off type barrel. This made loading easier, as one could use a larger ball than in it had to be rammed from the muzzle. Using a larger ball also made this short barrel length much more effective. Unlike its competition, it featured a very nice double action trigger. In this way, it even had Henry Deringer’s single action pistol beat. The same 1845 patent used on this pistol was also used on Allen’s various pepperboxes as well.

The overall condition is good. The exterior features a dark patina. The markings are slightly faint around the breech. “ALLEN THURBER & CO.”, April patent date and serial number on the barrel. “ALLEN’S PATENT 1845” clearly on the bar hammer. All numbers match. Grips are in good condition and also match. Bore is in good condition and the action is excellent.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 3-1/4 inches in length.

Caliber: .36 percussion

Bores are in good condition. The firing mechanism is excellent.

Overall condition as seen in photos.
