Description:
#1, Charles Smith Maker, 37 Market Place, Newark Upon Trent: A 16 Bore Nitro Proved Bar Action Lock Rebounding Hammer Game Gun with a Under-Snap-Action Purdey Thumbhole Lever, 30" Extractor 1993 Birmingham Nitro Proved Damascus barrels at 900 BAR with 2 1/2" chambers, The proper reproof marks, .672 .028 & .030" (Full & Full), 2 1/2" chambers, Wall thickness on the right barrel at .029" and .030" on the left, Rib Extension Dolls Head, Double underlugs with double bite, Splinter forend with a Rigby type swing lever forend release, A super nice piece of wood with deep blacks and browns, Straight hand stock at 14 1/2 x 1 9/16 x 2" over a 1" leather pad, 6 lbs. 4 oz., 90% coverage of very nice period scroll engraving, I am only going to presume that this piece was completely gone over in England when it was nitro proved in 1993, The barrel browning is excellent, The oil finish is excellent as is the checkering, The wood remains very stout in every respect, The internal inletting under the locks remains in excellent plus condition and totally free of any cracks or oil soak, The locks inside are excellent with every screw heat blued and not a buggered screw to be had, Some of the forend iron is heat blued plus all the internal screws, The bores are excellent plus and totally free of any pits. This gun is ready to go with modern 1993 Birmingham proved barrels that have a lot of barrel life left with .030" wall thickness for fun game bird shooting. //////////////////////////// Charles Smith & Sons started their trade in 1879, in the early 1890's they were at 37 Market Place (The Address of This Gun) and believe it or not remained there until 1953. Charles Smith passed away in 1908 but his 3 sons kept the business going. Back in 1878 Nixon of Newark listed guns marked "Nixon & Smith". Charles Smith started his apprenticeship with Nixon in 1878 and then became a partner. It became Charles Smith & Sons Ltd. and into the 1960's they were still in business.
