Description:
This P-38 is unusual in that it is a CVQ instead of CYQ, and it has a letter prefix instead of a suffix on the serial number. Spreewerke did this during the last months of the war to prevent duplicating serial numbers from prior manufacture. Prior to this run the firm had never used letter prefixes, only 4 digit serial numbers with a single letter suffix. This practice did not last long as it started during 1945 and they only made a few "c" prefix guns before the war ended and production was halted. The most widely accepted figure for total production of these prefix guns is approx. 20,000 total. This all matching example is in excellent original condition and has had very little use. These late war guns were built as fast as possible and very little care was taken in their appearance and you can see that in this pistol. Previously rejected parts were often used that didnt meet standards in 43 and 44, but in 1945 were deemed acceptable due to the acute shortage of arms. The slide on this pistol has some defects on the right side that would not have been acceptable in earlier times. The bore is excellent in this pistol with nice sharp rifling. It has a late Czech hammer and dark brown/black grips in excellent shape with no cracks or damage. This is a very interesting and scarce example of a late war Spreewerke P-38 variation not often seen for sale in any condition.
