Description:
In 1913 Smith & Wesson ventured into the semi-automatic pistol market with the Model 1913.  This pistol was chambered in their own proprietary .35 caliber cartridge, the ".35 S&W Auto".  Smith & Wesson ended up making just over 8300 of these automatics from 1913 until production ended in 1921.  It was not a commercial success due mainly to the unusual and proprietary cartridge.  The loading procedure was also foreign to most shooters, requiring extra steps to make it ready to fire that it's contemporaries did not.  One interesting feature of the Model 1913 was that it could fire the .32 ACP cartridge if the owner so chose to.  It resulted in bulged cases and reduced power and accuracy, but could be done in a pinch if the .35 S&W Auto ammo could not be found.  Eventually a refined version of the Model 1913 chambered for the .32 ACP was tried in the hopes of better sales but that too failed, with only 957 pistols sold.  The commercial failure of the Model 1913 ultimately led Smith & Wesson out of the semi auto pistol market entirely until 1954 when the firm built the Model 39, which ended up being a huge success.  The Model 1913 offered for sale here is in good original condition.  It retains between 80 and 85% of the original factory blue finish and has an excellent bore.  As you can see int he pictures, the finish wear is mostly concentrated on the high edges and grip straps.  This Model 1913 was certainly carried and shot, but not abused.  The original wooden grips have darkened with age and use, but are in good shape overall.  The metal backing plates and S&W medallions on both the left and right grip panels are nice and tight to the wood, and the only visible flaw is a very small crack below the screw escutcheon on the left hand grip.  Both grip panels are serial numbered to the gun.  Everything works 100% on this Model 1913 like the day it left the Smith & Wesson factory.  While finding .35 S&W Auto ammunition may be nearly impossible, .32 ACP ammo is plentiful and will fire in it should the future owner choose to shoot it.  This is a chance for a Smith & Wesson collector to get quite a rarity in all-original condition.
