ENGRAVED Antique EUROPEAN Flintlock Belt Pistol
HANDSOME Gentleman’s Pistol with Grotesque Mask
Here we present an antique European Flintlock Pistol, made circa the late 1700s in Europe. Belt-sized pistols like these were used to defend oneself when traveling or in public places. It was big enough to fight with, but not so large as to be cumbersome. They could be both as handsome or as plain as one desired or could afford.
Since there are no external markings the country of origin is not certain, but its form, aesthetic and engraving suggest Britain. It is not proof marked, but the pommel bears a grotesque mask which was a very English motif. One can imagine that this pistol may have been purchased by a gentleman or a successful businessman.
The overall condition is fine. The metal parts appear to have been finished in the white. The engraving is sharp and clean. The stock is in very good condition, a repair under the lock. The smooth bore is in very good condition and the action is fine.
