Antique Western EUROPEAN Percussion Belt Pistol
Spartan Gentleman’s Belt Pistol circa 1840
Here we present an antique Percussion Belt Pistol, made circa 1840 in Europe, perhaps France. Belt-sized pistols like these were used to defend oneself when traveling or in public places. It was big enough to fight with, but not so large as to be cumbersome. They could be both as handsome or as plain as one desired or could afford.
This specimen is utilitarian in design, being of high quality with little embellishment. Inside the lock reveals a maker’s mark “DW” and the underside of the barrel is marked “D/W” and “R” inside a rectangle. The barrel is 7-1/4 inches and octagonal. It features a .52 caliber smooth bore and an adjustable front sight.
The overall condition is fine. Metal is smooth and in the white. The stock is solid. The bore is in very good condition and the action is excellent.
