This revolver was brought on the market as the model of 1889 by H. Pieper of Liege, Belgium. The Mexican government ordered 5,000 units along with its companion carbine of the same caliber. Because the Mexican president declared in1893 that this weapon is the official sidearm of the Army, it is widely referred to as model of 1893. These revolvers had the words “Ejercito Mexicano”, Mexican Army, stamped on the frame, cylinder and barrel. The total length is 10.5", barrel length is 5.4", weight is 2 pounds 1.5 ounces and the cylinder holds 7 rounds. Most of these revolvers I have seen come with original hard rubber grips. This one has a low serial number(276) and original wooden grips which maybe limited to low numbered guns.
This weapon represents state-of-the-art 1890's revolver technology. It has Colt’s swing out cylinder, S&W’s pan ejection system, Charles Pyse’s rebounding hammer and, Pieper and Nagant’s gas seal system.
These revolvers saw lots of action fighting indians, suppressing revolts and was used widely during the Mexican Revolution of 1910. As a result of this heavy use many of these weapons are found with troubled actions. That is the case with this gun. All the parts appear to be there but the action needs looking at by a gunsmith or revolver mechanic.
