Description:

Antique SHARPS New Model 1863 Percussion Carbine

CIVIL WAR Cavalry Carbine in Original Configuration

Here we present an antique Sharps New Model 1863 Carbine, made circa 1863 in Hartford, Connecticut. Over 100,000 Sharps rifles and carbines were purchased and used by the federal government during the American Civil War. These powerful, accurate and reliable rifles certainly saw history from a firsthand perspective during the conflicts leading up to the Civil War, the war itself, and beyond on the frontier.

This specimen is an example of a saddle ring carbine used extensively by the cavalry during the war. Many of these were converted on contract after the Civil War to fire the improved metallic cartridge, the 50-70 Govt. This one is in its original percussion format, and looks incredible for its age. It features an iron patchbox in the butt, a feature which was included on a third of the New Model 1863 Production. It also includes the Sharps pellet priming system, which could be loaded into a spring-loaded magazine and used instead of the “hat” variety of percussion caps.

Identified inspector marks include those of Albert H. Kirkham and George Curtis.

Overall condition is very good. The iron parts are smooth and bright. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is fine. The bore is shiny and smooth, very good for a 150 year old black powder Civil War vet. Action is excellent.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 22 inches in length.

Caliber: .52 Sharps

Bore is in fine condition. The firing mechanism is excellent.

Overall condition as seen in photos.

Here is a very attractive original percussion Sharps New Model 1863 for your Civil War collection.
