Description:

Antique Belgian Licensed REMINGTON Egyptian Rifle

Circa 1870s Rolling Block No. 1 Rifle

Here we present an antique Remington No. 1 Rolling Block Rifle, made in Liege, Belgium, circa the 1870s for the Egyptian government. The Remington Rolling Block Rifle was designed and produced during the American Civil War. It was characterized by simple ruggedness and a strong action. Though there were plenty of more glamorous rifles out there with more firepower, this became the world’s choice for arming their militaries. Over 1 million of these rifles were produced on contract for a myriad of countries from the Americas to Europe, and even Asia.

This specimen is an example of the Egyptian contract of the 1870s. It was licensed from Remington to be made in Belgium. These Egyptian rifles saw much hard use in a tough climate, during difficult times. Over the course of 10 years, from 1859 to 1869, the Suez Canal was under construction. From 1879 to 1882 Egypt was caught up in the ‘Urabi Revolt, a nationalistic uprising against government corruption and the French and English influences (and preferences), led by Colonel Ahmed ‘Urabi . This culminated in 1882 with the English, led by Admiral Beauchamp Seymour, bombarding Alexandria and the invading with troops. It is said that England did not want ‘Urabi, if victorious, to default on Egypt’s massive debts, as well as lose control of the Suez Canal.

Belgian proofs are located on the left side of the barrel. “B” is stamped on the left side of the frame. The top of the barrel bears its unit markings.

The overall condition of this piece is very good. The metal is bright and smooth. The stock is solid. The bore is in very good condition. The action is strong.
