Antique ENFIELD 1853 3 Band Rifle-Musket Date 1862

Numerous Makers Marks 1860s Imperial British Rifle

Here we present an antique Enfield Pattern 1853 Three Band Rifle-Musket, made in 1862 in England. The P’53 was the British Military Ordnance Board’s choice for adoption as the primary long arm in 1853. These were used in the Crimean War from 1854 to 1856, the Sepoy Mutiny from 1857 to 1858, the New Zealand Land Wars that ended in 1872, and many various other conflicts, especially in colonies in British Imperial possession in the 1850s, 60s and 70s. Many were even sold to both the Union and Confederacy during the American Civil War.

This very nice British contract example is covered in makers’ marks and proofs. Among them are the following identified makers. “DEAKIN” and “J.BOURNE” are found under the barrel. William Deakin was the maker of the barrel. Joseph Bourne was a Birmingham gun maker who was likely contracted to set up the gun. There are also the initials, which appear to be “S.W.”, possibly those of an inspector. The initials of Isaac Hollis & Sons are inside the lock, as are the initials “A.P” and the name “BRIDGWATER”, which is a town in southwest England. The initials “T&GC” are those of Thomas & Charles Gilbert and can be found inside the stock, along with other stamps in the wood. There is a faint circular stamp on the right side of the butt stock. The lock is marked “1862/TOWER” and “Crown/V.R” for Queen Victoria on the exterior.

The overall condition of the piece is very good. The barrel is bright on top and shows its original blue finish underneath, where it has been protected by the stock. The numerous markings are quite legible. The stock is still solid, though obviously quite the veteran. The bore is in good condition. The action is strong.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 39 inches in length.

Caliber: .577 percussion

Bore is in good condition. The firing mechanism is excellent.

Overall condition as seen in photos.
