#6962, Mortimer & Son, 86 George Street, Edinburgh: A Mortimer & Son 12 Bore Nitro Proved Hammerless Boxlock Extractor Game Gun Made in 1881 with a Under Snap Action Push Forward Lever-Cocked Gun, 30" Extractor 2010 London Nitro Proved Damascus barrels with 2 3/4" chambers, .727 .000 & .000" (Cyl. & Cyl.), 2 3/4" chambers, Wall thickness on the right barrel at .038" and on the left barrel at .032", Double underlugs with double bite, Top tang safety, Splinter forend with a Deeley & Edge patent forend release, Straight hand stock at 14 1/2 x 1 9/16 x 2" over a horn buttplate, Cast-On for the left hand, 6 lbs. 9 oz., It has 85%coverage of period floral & scroll engraving; It has a very nice piece of wood with nice color, contrast and figure, The barrel brown is 96% and have been re-browned, The wood is extremely solid on both the butt and forend and retains a refinish at 95%, The checkering is at 98-99%, The bores are excellent with the new 2010 London reproof, The barrel striking is excellent. /////////////////////////////////// Thomas Elsworth Mortimer and his son Thomas Alfred Clark Mortimer operated the firm of Mortimer & Son in 1854 from 86 George Street in Edinburgh and traded under that name until 1938. During this span of years they acquired the firm of Joseph Harkom but in 1938 they joined forces with John Dickson & Son, Dickson still operates in Edinburgh to this day. Dickson closed its retail store in February 2017 in Edinburgh but will still make guns at their Dunkeld shop. The Mortimer name lives on to this day at dicksonandmacnaughton.
