1800s BELGIAN Antique Percussion Belt Pistol
Stately Gentleman’s Belt Pistol circa 1840
Here we present an antique Percussion Belt Pistol, made circa 1840 in Liege, Belgium. Belt-sized pistols like these were used to defend oneself when traveling or in public places. It was big enough to fight with, but not so large as to be cumbersome. They could be both as handsome or as plain as one desired or could afford.
This specimen has been through the ringer, but one can still see the artisanship that went into making and decorating this pistol. The trigger is hidden away until the hammer is cocked, a feature that helped to pack this gun around. There is a percussion cap trap located in the butt of the pistol. The frame is hand engraved, and the barrel is an example of fine twist. The barrel is also marked “LONDON”, which was the likely market for this pistol. A Liege proof is located on the left side of the frame.
The overall condition is fair. The features of this pistol show through years of wear and tear. This would make a great display piece.
