Description:
ATTIC CONDITION 1868 .50-70 CALIBER TRAPDOOR RIFLE, most of these rifles were sent west for the Indian Wars, this one is an uncleaned, unmessed with example, correct 1863 Civil War dated lock plate (all of this model were altered from Civil War .58 Caliber muzzle loaders), correct 1870 dated breech block, barrel and receiver numbers match, stock is solid but looks dry and shows use and handling, but no abuse- lots of light handling marks etc., aged, uncleaned plum/brown barrel, correct swivels and sight- rear sight ladder either broken or cut off, but the two sighting grooves remain, tight action, exc. bore, cleaning rod intact, many of these were actually given by frontier forts to settlers who didn't have firearms for protection- this was common here in Montana (Fort Ellis just outside Bozeman, MT did this)b, still has a faint cartouche on the left side of the stock, lots of frontier history in these and still under priced, but beginning to rise
