ENGLISH Antique J. BISHOP Percussion Belt Pistol
LONDON Marked Circa 1840s Defense Pistol
Here we present an antique Percussion Belt Pistol, made circa 1840 in England, by J. Bishop. Belt-sized pistols like these were used to defend oneself when traveling or in public places. It was big enough to fight with, but not so large as to be cumbersome. They could be both as handsome or as plain as one desired or could afford.
This specimen features an engraved lock, hammer, barrel and trigger guard. The lock is marked “J. BISHOP” and the barrel “LONDON”. There is a small percussion cap trap in the bottom of the stock. Ramrod is captive, so that it would not be lost.
The overall condition is good. The engraving and markings are still clear and legible. The walnut stock is in good condition, with just a little weakening around the top of the lock. The captive ramrod is a bit loose. The bore is rifled. The action is strong.
