Here we present an antique Manhattan 3-Shot Pepperbox Revolver, made circa 1856, prior the American Civil War, in Norwich, Connecticut. Manhattan Fire Arms Co. was founded in 1856 specifically to capitalize on the soon to be expiring Colt patents in 1857. This strategy worked very well for the company and they began by making high quality and very close copies of both Colts and other popular pistols with expired patents. In fact, Manhattan’s copies of Colts were so close that Colt tried to kill their production with a lawsuit, even though their patent had expired. Quite obviously, this pistol is a direct and quality copy of the Colt 1851 Navy. Manhattan’s revolvers were very well received by the public. The company never received U.S. military contracts, except for a small delivery, most likely on the regimental level. Nevertheless, many Manhattan revolvers found themselves on smoky Civil War battlefields, purchased privately by officers and soldiers, and they were certainly in use at home. The war created a vast and unquenchable market for firearms of all types. This piece is a very rare example of a Manhattan Pepperbox. The company produced about 2,500 in many different variations, including barrel lengths and number of shots. While all of them featured a double action trigger and hammer, most of them also revolved the barrel with a pull of the trigger. This 3-shot version is exceedingly rare, and was the only one of Manhattan’s Pepperboxes that required the turning of the barrel cluster by hand. The overall condition of the piece is very good. The exterior of the iron parts has a gray patina. The markings are clear and legible. Grips are in very good condition. The action is fine. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 3 inches in length. Caliber: .31 percussion The bores are in good condition and the action is strong. Overall condition as seen in photos. Here is a rare Manhattan Pepperbox for your firearm collection! Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
