U.S. Springfield 1861 Rifle Turned Pistol Creation

Civil War Dated Lock Used to Make Pistol Dated 1880

Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1861 Rifle, turned into a pistol, circa 1880. The Springfield Rifle Musket was the most prolific infantry weapon of the entire American Civil War. It represented cutting edge technology in some ways, but was growing more obsolete by the minute. As soon as the Civil War was over, many of these were converted, and hundreds of thousands more were sold on the surplus market. Unsurprisingly, they can be found at times to have some fairly interesting work done to them. This specimen is one of the most interesting I have seen.

This pistol was built using the barrel, lock work, and stock from an original Springfield Rifle Musket. Both the barrel and the stock have been cut down to size, with a wooden pistol grip fastened on, and various embellishments made. The bottom of the grip has a flat brass piece tacked in place. The maker punch-dotted the date “1880” into it. There are also a series of 9 notches cut into the left side of the stock. Another brass plate has been tacked onto the wrist area of the old stock.

The lock is dated “1862” and still bears the federal eagle over “U.S. SPRINGFIELD”. The left side of the barrel still bears federal government proof markings.

As you can imagine, it is front heavy, but it is sturdy and it works.

This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 6-1/2 inches in length.

Caliber: .58 percussion

Bore is in good condition. The firing mechanism is functional.

Overall condition as seen in photos.
