ENGRAVED Euro Double Barrel SxS Pinfire Pistol

LARGE Bores

Here we present an antique European Pinfire Double Barrel Pistol, made circa 1850. This pistol was made for self-defense in 19th Century Europe. It was designed to be handy and powerful with triggers that folded out of the way and a .56 caliber chambering. The triggers descended as the hammers were cocked, and both barrels could be fired at once or one at a time. Very much like a shotgun in design, the lever underneath swivels to lock or unlock the barrels, which tip up for loading.

The pinfire cartridge was one of the very first successful metallic, self-contained cartridges in history. It was invented by Frenchman Casimir Lefaucheux, and he was granted a patent in the mid-1830s. This predates the invention of rimfire by about 10 years. Aside from being first, the pinfire cartridge was not primed on the back of the cartridge, but had a pin (basically a firing pin) projecting out of the side of the cartridge. Thus the firearms made for this early cartridge had flat hammers that struck the cartridge from the top, as the pin would project out of a small hole in the chamber. The first revolver to shoot these ingenious cartridges was Casimir’s son Eugene Gabriel Lefaucheux in 1854.

The design was hugely successful and many European militaries adopted them. The design was also licensed to many firms, especially in Belgium, but many were also made in France, Spain and Germany.

This example is in good condition. The iron has a deep, dark patina. Grips are fair. Bores are dark. The firing mechanism is functional.
