Description:
Springfield Model 1879 trapdoor 45/70 carbine in very good overal condition.  A real Carbine, not a cutdown rifle. All metal is smooth gray without pitting an has good markings as evidenced by photos. Breech marked US Model 1873.  Serial no. 188458* with an upgraded Buffington M1884 rear sight correctly marked with the "C" for Carbine. No sling ring.  All wood is good except a chip in the forestock left side and a visible crack in the stock near the faceplate right rear side.  Bore is good.  I attempted to take a picture of the bore.  A starred Springfield is one brought back to the arsenal between 1880-83 to be rebuilt and the new rebuilds were stamped with the star.  Barrel bands has a "U"stamped. Those built in 1882 had a sharp pointed star while those built in 1880 and 1881 a rounded star.  Only 501 carbines were built in 1881 and none in 1882.  Rebuilds were not counted as production.
The stock has no visilble cartouche.  The butt plate has "US" stamp.  The butt does have the correct trapdoor latch compartment. swing latch. The barrel has a crisp "V/P/Eaglehead/P" proof.  The breech block is marked US Model 1873. Trigger guard is correct for the carbine w/o the swivel sling.
Please allow 5-7 business day for check to clear.  Buyer pays shipping and insurance aproximately $75.  I have never fired this gun, it is an antique and if you plan to fire it have a qualifed gunsmith check it out.  No FFL it is an antique. Was $1295 now $1095.
