Like many London gun makers, the premier Scottish gun makers built their bolt action rifles using either the best German Mauser actions or the famous Austrian Mannlicher Schoenauer actions. Daniel Fraser has been one of the most revered makers in Scottish gun making history.
This rifle was built on the time-tested 1903 Schoenauer action honed and polished, with an extremely crisp trigger release, in the highly regarded European .264 cartridge, the 6.5x57mm case which is a necked down 7mm Mauser (read history below). The superb engraving on the floorplate is a European Red Stag inlaid in gold and embellished in a Celtic oval border. The stock is near EXHIBITION grade marblecake Turkish walnut with beaded cheek piece (shadow line) and wrap-around point pattern 24 lpi checkering perfectly executed with double borders, adorned with an ebony forearm tip, an ebony pistol grip cap and sling swivel studs.
Length of Pull is 14 3/8”, scope is the excellent Zeiss Diavari 3-9x36C mounted in blued steel German EAW Mannlicher Schoenauer Quick Release rings. Condition of the rifle is 99%.
History: The famed W.D.M. Bell, who shot more than 1,000 elephants in the period 1895 to 1930, had Daniel Fraser build him a special lightweight rifle on the Mannlicher Schoenauer action in 6.5 calibre. He only set it aside when he was unable to acquire dependable ammunition for it in those days, and turned to the larger 7x57mm (same case). Bell’s legendary name has remained closely linked with the 7mm Mauser, but the 6.5 mm was his first preference. This rifle, like Bell’s, has a 22” barrel. In the May 2016 issue of American Rifleman, in the article “In Pursuit of A Really Good Rifle”, the author points out the admiration that Ernest Hemingway had for this combination of action and caliber and actually owned three of these rifles.
About the Gun Maker: According to Robin MacDonald Rolfe, in his article “Daniel Fraser & Co.”, The Double Gun Journal, Vol.6 Issue 1, “The Black Isle in the Scottish Highlands… cannot be the place one would expect to find a high quality gun and rifle maker…. In 1983, Bernard Horton bought the rights to the name from the last surviving relative of the great nineteenth century gunsmith [born in Inverness] …The wheel had gone full circle, Daniel Fraser had come home… Horton, who, like Daniel Fraser before him, has received a number of awards and patents for his work in the design and manufacture of sporting arms. He was recently placed among the top ten businesses in Scotland, selected out of 8,000 businesses for technical design and innovative qualities…There is no compromise; no second best.” The author summed up, “The modern Fraser gun or rifle differs little, really, from its illustrious predecessor.” Horton’s principle is that his skilled craftsmen “carry on until it’s right.” Annual production is only eighteen to twenty-two shotguns, seven to eight double rifles and six bolt-action rifles. Bernard’s works of art have been supplied to a past U.S. president, European royalty and Middle Eastern potentates. The starting price of a bolt action rifle was 4,000 pounds in 1995 or $9,600 US today. This rifle represents only one of six made in 1992. Price $9.250.

About the 6.5x57mm cartridge. Available by several German ammo manufacturers including RWS, the most common load is with a 93 grain Spitzer bullet. Because the case is a necked down 7mm case, components are readily available for easy hand-loading. 6.5x57 mm is a 6.55 mm (.260 cal.) rifle cartridge; 6.55 bullets are typically known for high ballistic coefficients and sectional density, which gives them great stability in flight, resistance to wind deflection, and great penetrative power, regardless of impact velocity. This is a great caliber for someone who wants to have something a little different on the range or in the field – better cross sectional density than a 257 Roberts and a little less kick than a 264 Win Mag.
