Circa 1800 Antique EUROPEAN Flintlock HORSE Pistol
With Very Interesting Markings on Lock & Barrel
Here we present an antique European Flintlock Horse Pistol, made circa 1800. This pistol was designed as a fighting pistol, likely from horseback. It is large, with a long barrel and large caliber. The design of the pommel is European in style, used as a club when the single shot was expended.
The grip of the stock is wrapped tightly with hide, then stitched and shrunk into place. This is quite firm and stable, perhaps as a field repair or modification, though no break can be detected. The lock and the barrel are hand engraved in a language unfamiliar to me. European-style proof marks are on the left side of the barrel. Place of origin could almost certainly be determined by identification of the language of the markings on the lock and barrel. Bore is smooth.
The overall condition of the piece is very good. The stock is solid. The bore is in very good condition. The action is strong.
