Description:

Mississippi Rifle Model 1841 US percussion rifle aka “Mississippi rifle” 15-85

Marked N. Haven, 1850 marked on the back of the lock, marked “E” Whitney” on the middle of the lock. 54 calibers, 33” round barrel bore has been bored out to smooth bore probably for civil war use. The rifle had a browned barrel, case-hardened lock and hammer and brass furniture with the distinctive large brass patch box with place for spare nipple. Lock metal is very clean with no corrosion on lock but some on barrel next to bolster and attend. The stock is oil-finished walnut. The M1841 Rifle is often referred to as the “Mississippi Rifle” for its use by the 1st Mississippi Regiment led by Jefferson Davis at the Battle of Buena Vista in the Mexican War. The M1841 was continually modified and saw extensive service in both service with both Federal and Confederate forces during the first years of the Civil War.

Condition: Very Good. The barrel has a smooth brown patina finish overall with some light pitting on nipple and bolster and bbl. Next to bolster and the end. The case-hardened hammer and lock plate have aged to dark patina. All markings on the lock are clear. But 1850 and N. Haven at back of lock are a little weak stamp. The brass furniture is in fine condition and free from nicks and scratches. The stock shows normal wear with a few hair line age cracks, and looks very attractive. The action is crisp and tight. A solid example of a dated M1841 Rifle.
