The Remington New Model was Colt’s biggest competition for military contracts during the American Civil War. The Remington New Model Army was second only to the Colt 1860 Army for military contracts during the war. These were in the hands of many cavalrymen and officers. About 122,000 of these were made between 1863 and 1875. This pistol saw continued use for the next 20 years, especially famously in the American West. The pistol saw action in the Indian Wars and on buffalo hunts, and was used by such legends as William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody, who said about the New Model, “It never failed me.” Indeed, the Remington New Model Army was a well-made firearm, and rightly made for stiff competition against Colt. This was the final iteration of the design first introduced by Fordyce Beals with the Whitney Navy and then with the Remington-Beals Revolver. It was one of the earliest successful solid frame revolvers. Though it didn’t beat Colt in sheer numbers, Remington’s solid frame proved to be the more robust design and the way revolvers went after the war. This example is in fine condition. About 40% original blue finish remains. The markings are clear and legible. The serial numbers match on the barrel, frame and trigger guard. The original walnut grips are fine, with a clear “BH” inspector cartouche for Benjamin Hannis. The bore is fine and shiny. The action is superb. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is octagonal and 8 inches in length. Caliber: .44 percussion Bore is in fine condition.
