Parker Brothers VHE "A1S Upgrade" in 20 Gauge. The shotgun, originally a VHE grade, was later acquired by Mr. Tom Turpin, a freelance gun writer, and about 1975-1977 had the shotgun shipped overseas to Mr. Erich Boessler, a master engraver, of Munnerstadt, Germany, to have it upgraded with A1S engraving pattern. The nicely figured walnut stock was also made in Germany and is similarly patterned after A1S checkering. Unfortunately there is no information as to the stockmaker’s name. Tom Turpin (1938 - ?), a freelance gun and hunting writer, pinning hundreds of magazine articles during his 40 year career with his first published in early 1970s in Guns & Ammo Magazine. He also had numerous articles published in Gun Digest annual. Mr. Turpin also wrote five firearm books, four in hardbound and the last an ebook. Hardbound books, Modern Custom Guns (1997), Custom Firearms Engraving (1999), Mastery Of Wood & Metal (2005) and Custom Rifles (2012), and ebook-Kindle edition, Greatest Cartridges of All Time (2014).The shotgun with serial number 206720 was manufactured in 1924, and features an 0 frame action, 28” barrels, double triggers, ejectors and jeweled watertable, which is stamped with “(AIS)” and “8” (for grade). Mr. Boessler’s initials also appear on the water table; though tiny they are deeply stamped and located beneath the last 0 of the serial number. The 28” barrels’ matted and concaved rib is engraved with “>>>>>--> Parker Bros. Makers, Meriden, Ct. U.S.A. Vulcan Steel <--<<<<<”, and has a brass bead front sight. The barrels are 2 3/4” chambered and choke constrictions; right: .021 (I.M. ) & left: .023 (I.M.). The shotgun weighs 6 1/2 Lbs. with 14 1/8” length of pull, 1 3/8” drop at comb and 2 1/2” drop at heel. The engraved action, upper and lower tangs, trigger guard, release lever, forend release lever and iron, skeleton butt-plate, and all screws have extensive scroll and floral engraving. The breech ends of the barrels are engraved with 3” triangles of a semi-relief scroll and floral with stippled shading. The action’s engraving: The fences have assorted blossoms and leaves, and three stepped-down beads at the base. The release lever is engraved with scroll, blossoms and leaves and is pierced at thumbpiece with three shade holes, and the upper tang is engraved with scroll, boarders and other floral patterns. Trigger guard’s bow is pierced with three shaped holes of teardrops and a diamond. The extended trigger guard/lower tang has floral and scroll engraving and the serial numbers are plated with gold. The smooth triggers are also plated in gold, though significantly worn.The honey colored, nicely figured, straight grip walnut stock has fleur de lis, wraparound fine line checkering, a blank silver initial plate and an engraved skeleton butt plate. The near fully checkered semi-beavertail forend with double fleur de lis pattern has an engraved pull-down release lever and iron.Overall the shotgun is in good condition. Barrels and rib have good bluing throughout save for a partial browning along both sides of the forend, and there a few small scratches which are concealed under the forend. The engraved action has nice silver to black contrasting tones throughout. There is no remaining cased colors, which were probably completely removed at time of the A1S upgrade. The stocks show signs of field use with a small number of short scratches and small dings, and the skeleton butt-plate is proud over the wood. The bores are bright and shiny, the barrel release lever is centered to the upper tang, however the barrel to action fit is slightly off face with just a hint of being loose.There are a total of 17 photographs included here, the last shows a letter of provenance.
