Description:
W.R. Pape 12 Bore Side-by-Side
RARE SIDELOCK BEST GUN, 1917, BOSS SINGLE TRIGGER, FANTASTIC GUN!

General Specs: W.R. Pape, Year 1915, 12 Gauge, 6lbs 14oz, SxS
Serial Number:12329

Search for a BEST BRITISH SIDELOCK made by W.R. Pape and you will likely come up empty-handed as I did. Best known for building boxlock ejector guns of top-quality, he was a gunmaker of note from the mid-1800’s to the 1930’s when his son and successor closed his shop on Collingwood Street, Newcastle. Many are unaware that Pape was the creator and patent holder on choke boring in 1866, which many attribute this important development solely to W.W. Greener. Holder of many patents and winner of many London gun trials, those who have had the privilege of handling a gun built by Pape understand he was amongst the best. This BEST SLE, sn12329 built in 1915, remains in amazing condition with 30” Sir Joseph Whitworth barrels choked IC/LM, were reproofed in London in 1993 for 2 ¾” shells, have perfect mirror bores, the gun weighing 6lbs. 14oz. and balanced perfectly on the hinge pin. I enjoy the opportunity to handle and observe the very finest guns ever built, and this gun is amongst the best observed. I acquired this gun along with a 1906 vintage Boss Best SLE and compared the engraving…the Pape is far superior in detail and execution. The actions in fact were very similar, with highly refined locks and springs. The European walnut stock is original to the gun and has superb figure and perfect layout through the wrist. The gun is mechanically excellent throughout, with perfect wood to metal fit, recently restored wood with perfect checkering including the original mullered border. The gun is tight on hinge pin and breech face, the screws are perfect, and 60% case color remains on the sculpted frame complete with beaded fences. The execution and detail in the fine English scroll is better than I have ever seen on any gun from any maker…simply stunning. For those who like a single trigger, this one has a Boss Single non-selective trigger identical to the trigger in the accompanying Boss that came from the same estate. The previous owner was a tall gentleman. The gun has a LOP of 15 3/8” to a rear position single trigger measured to a fine leather covered pad (14 ¼” to the end of the wood, sans pad), 2 5/8” DAH, 1 9/16” DAC, and 3/16” cast off (we can bend to your specs, no problem). You would expect this gun to have the value of the Boss, but with few SLE Pape guns in existence, we have no base to compare to. This gun is an extremely good value and for anyone who knows their guns they will scoop it up in an instant, so don’t hesitate or she will be gone! Thanks for looking and enjoy the photos of the very finest engraving you will likely witness in your lifetime.
